Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
