American Military Executes Lethal Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Deaths
According to a senior military official, the American military executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amidst Pressure
The administration has faced increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
