Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
