RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
