England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry featured at a lower division club. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from player to coach commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the peak according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. The approach feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of the trends but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To create a system for effective use in that window, we have to use all the time available from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the integrity. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely as they do in club games, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
