Far-Right Former Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to tackle rising violence and drastically curb immigration.
He consistently blamed immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His plans envisioned controversial measures such as erecting holding facilities, high walls, security fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Part of a Continental Shift
Several analysts see Kast's victory as part of a wider rightward shift in Latin America, coming after recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also frame it as a part of the established swing of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Clear Majority
In spite of his decisive popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to have an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative reality may challenge his plans, including a vow to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many things about how a Kast government will operate that remain unclear because he has not said the way he will do them," noted a political science expert.
The expert continued, "Regarding the economy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
