Grief as Renowned South African DJ Gunned Down in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before running away.
The reason of the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.
The Fatal Incident
Law enforcement revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the building managing the implementation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.
"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement stated.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.
"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to establish their location," added an official.
Outpouring of Grief
His family member, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's young family.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including security provision, providing VIP protection services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in property management and was involved in building evictions.
Official and Public Tributes
His murder has sent the nation reeling and led to an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the government and political parties.
A senior figure said he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's murder.
"He was forthright boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my actions as a public official. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," the minister added.
A public representative said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "Stock was far beyond a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a true devotee of sound and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, approachability and quick humor, adding that his memory "will live on".
