Her Royal Highness's Traditional Festive Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to budding artists backed by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by television on December 24th.
