Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
