New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Submit ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has launched a new online portal asking locals to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step comes just a shortly after a major ICE raid disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.
American Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation
A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Protests occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents has the right to reside free from terror," the AG declared in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to share that evidence with us. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and determining any violations of law."
Portal Features
The form provides fields to submit images and video footage of the operation, plus a section to indicate geographic details. When submitting, users must tick a checkbox that confirms that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included dozens of federal agents, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are sold daily en masse – often to tourists.
Footage of the incident depict numerous hooded and equipped officers restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of residents trailed the agents along the roads. An armored military vehicle was also seen traveling down the urban roads.
Political Response
At a Wednesday press conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He noted the citizens were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman remarked. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to prevent violence that they initiated."
Broad Criticism
Fury over the federal action rapidly grew – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the federal government selects authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC community groups expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, covered personnel and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and communities," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has claimed it refrains from apprehend US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and across the US lately.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations targeting immigration enforcement are ubiquitous including claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a letter filed by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of pregnant women in detention centers.
