Southern California Battles Historic High Temperatures Only One Week After Major Winter Storm.
After enduring significant rainfall that caused flooding across areas in the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably warm conditions for this time of year.
All-Time High Heat
On Friday midday, the thermometer reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by the National Weather Service. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on NWS charts for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Authorities stated that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Reversal
This sudden spike in mercury comes on the heels of a intense storm system that battered the area last week. That storm delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, triggering evacuation orders for many residents.
Sadly, the conditions also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead cooler conditions is coming. Readings were predicted to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in central Los Angeles by Friday night.
Other locales that reached ninety degrees included Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to experience the high 80s.
For the weekend, central Los Angeles can expect weather in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the following week.
