The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent term emerged several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to attend to a young patient who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
