Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be tough to duplicate the higher calling he experienced as England’s manager.

He indicated his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the youth and countering what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Football

In a recent radio interview, the manager was asked about rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Role Models

Ahead of the launch of his new title, his new work on leadership, the author shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for the youth, applying insights from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He maintains that his time managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, the coach observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Discord

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His new release, Dear England, is scheduled to offer additional perspectives on guidance and country pride inspired by his notable professional journey.
