The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home now and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, described.
"We are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of six people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
