Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
