Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
